Have you ever wondered what would happen if your laptop and your grill had an affair ….?
If you lost your computer RIGHT NOW, would you be losing all your data? (read the end..)
Well .. it just so happens that I was fortunate enough to learn of what happens after an affair like that..!!
I won’t go into any crazy details on how this happened (it is quite embarrassing) but let’s just say that a sunny day is a great day to grill hamburgers
A really bad part of this is though, this isn’t even my laptop .. it’s my moms.
What’s even worse is that she didn’t have a backup of her files!!
The laptop is a Dell Inspiron 15r.
What I wanted to tell YOU about is that something like this can happen to just about anyone, even YOU!!
Anyway, now that the computer is “ruined”, let’s see how much the grill managed to destroy..
Opening the lid reveals a really surprising sight!
The keyboard, trackpad and LCD screen seem remarkably intact, although the DVD drive tray was a bit stuck in its place…
The biggest question remained – will the computer boot up?
Using battery mode only – nada.
Using the charger (that was ALSO grilled) – success..!!
… and BIOS tells us that the battery has experienced a permanent failure and needs to be replaced ……… really..?
Well, the good news is that the computer booted up, and was able to function normally.
This means I am able to take a backup of all of the vital data – thank the binary-gods.
This computer is a Dell Inspiron 15r. It’s only ~$669 over at Amazon..
Protection against data loss?
Needless to say, I told my mom that I’m going to install the SpiderOak client on her computer so she won’t have to worry about data loss ever again in case her computer is destroyed.
Better yet, all the data she has been saving and using is synchronized to all the other computers.
Maybe you’re familiar with file synchronization .. you’ve probably heard of dropbox or box.net .. this is a similar service .. but better (IMHO)!
You may ask yourself, why do I think Spideroak is better than the other available services?
Well, in my opinion, Spideroak has these things over the other services:
- Data security – your data is stored and sent encrypted over the internet.
- Data privacy – your data is encrypted on SpiderOak’s servers, they won’t be able to access it
- Password security – your password is encrypted BEFORE it is sent over to them, so they don’t even know what the password is
- Simple synchronization for your Documents, Pictures, Movies, Music and custom folders (one click – see image below)
- Option to back up your data offline as well (highly recommended)
- Application available for Windows, Mac AND Linux – a lot of services out there have promised Linux support, but this service actually goes through with it..!!
Other services may have a few of these features, but SpiderOak simply blew me away with all of this.
Best part of this though is that they offer anyone who signs up a free 2GB account. If you need more space then they offer a really cheap upgrade, 100GB for $10 per month or $100 yearly ($20 bucks off!!!).
I recommend you SIGN UP NOW with SpiderOak (or any other backup service) and start backing up your stuff before something unpredictable happens!
